Intersectionality

Animal protection is inextricably linked to human rights, intersecting across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. A comprehensive understanding of wildlife conservation requires not only knowledge of species and ecosystems, but also an appreciation of the historical, cultural, and political contexts that shape human relationships with the natural world. The stewardship of animals is deeply influenced by patterns of land use, governance, and the rights of local and Indigenous communities whose livelihoods and traditions are intertwined with these environments.

Efforts to protect animals cannot be meaningfully advanced without simultaneously addressing issues of equity, justice, and human well-being. Communities facing poverty, displacement, or marginalization are often compelled to rely on natural resources for survival, which can place additional pressure on wildlife. Conversely, inclusive conservation strategies that respect human rights and empower local populations have been shown to produce more sustainable and ethical outcomes. In this sense, the pursuit of animal protection is inseparable from the broader pursuit of human justice; one cannot be fully realized without the other. Learn more about the history of China below.

History of China

  • The Xia and Shang Dynasties

    c. 1600–1046 BCE

The Shang Dynasty is the first historically confirmed dynasty, known for its bronze work and early writing systems etched on oracle bones.

  • The Zhou Dynasty & Philosophies

The Zhou introduced the "Mandate of Heaven"—the idea that rulers were divinely chosen. Its later years dissolved into the chaotic Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Out of this conflict emerged foundational Chinese philosophies: Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism.

  • Qin Dynasty

    221–206 BCE

Qin Shi Huang unified the warring states, established the first centralized Chinese empire, and standardized language, currency, and measurements. He initiated early versions of the Great Wall.

  • Han Dynasty

    206 BCE – 220 CE

This was a cultural golden age that solidified Han Chinese identity. It officially adopted Confucianism and established the Silk Road, linking China to the West.

  • Golden Ages (Tang & Song)

The Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) was a high point for poetry and cosmopolitan culture. The Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) revolutionized the global economy with profound technological advancements, including movable type printing, the magnetic compass, and paper money.

  • Foreign-Led Dynasties (Yuan & Qing)

China was twice conquered and ruled by outsiders. Mongol forces established the Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368 CE), famously hosting Marco Polo. The Manchu-led Qing Dynasty (1644–1911 CE) vastly expanded China's borders but eventually faltered due to internal rebellions and conflicts with Western powers (like the Opium Wars).

  • The Republican Era

    1911 - 1949

The 1911 Xinhai Revolution ended over two millennia of dynastic rule, establishing the Republic of China. This era was deeply unstable, plagued by warlord conflict, the brutal Japanese invasion during World War II, and a bitter civil war between the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and the Communist Party of China (CPC).

  • Mao Era

    1949–1976

On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China on the mainland, while the Nationalists fled to Taiwan. This era saw radical, turbulent social and economic changes, most notably the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

  • Reform and Modernization

    1978 – Present

Following Mao's death, leader Deng Xiaoping transitioned China into a "socialist market economy". These market reforms sparked decades of unprecedented economic growth, transforming China into an industrial, technological, and exporting global powerhouse.
