Man Charged Over Alleged Attempt to Traffic 163 Native Reptiles out of Australia

A 21-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody in Australia over allegations that he attempted to smuggle 163 native reptiles from Sydney to Hong Kong between December 2025 and March 2026. National Environmental Protection Agency investigators intercepted 38 packages containing shingleback lizards, blue-tongued lizards, dragon species, eastern hooded scalyfoots, and Cunningham’s skinks. The reptiles were allegedly concealed inside parcels containing leather bags and slippers. Investigators allege the man was connected to an international wildlife trafficking network that used an Australian reptile breeder to obtain native animals for illegal export. A subsequent search of the breeder’s residence in Adelaide resulted in the seizure of electronic devices, two dead lizards, and a live lizard reportedly in poor condition. The accused is scheduled to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on October 28, while the investigation continues.
