Animals of Turkey

Gray Wolf

Conservation Status: Least Concern

The Gray Wolf is the largest member of the dog family, found in forests, grasslands, mountains, and tundra across North America, Europe, and Asia. Highly social, it lives and hunts in packs, feeding on deer, elk, wild boar, and other large mammals. As an apex predator, the Gray Wolf helps maintain healthy ecosystems by regulating prey populations. Its intelligence, endurance, and teamwork have made it one of the world's most successful predators.

African Soft-shell Turtle

Conservation Status: Vulnerable

The African Softshell Turtle is a large freshwater turtle found in rivers, lakes, and wetlands across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is recognized by its flat, leathery shell, long snorkel-like snout, and powerful webbed feet, which make it an excellent swimmer. Feeding on fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and other aquatic animals, it is an important predator in freshwater ecosystems. Its streamlined body allows it to bury itself in sand or mud while waiting to ambush prey.

Dalmatian Pelican

Conservation Status: Vulnerable

The Dalmatian Pelican is one of the world's largest flying birds, found in lakes, rivers, wetlands, and coastal lagoons across Europe and Asia. Recognized by its silvery-white plumage, massive orange bill, and impressive wingspan, it feeds mainly on fish caught with its expandable throat pouch. Dalmatian Pelicans nest in colonies on islands and floating vegetation, where they raise their young close to productive wetlands. Habitat loss, wetland disturbance, and pollution have made the species near threatened.

Anatolian Leopard

Conservation Status: Endangered

The Anatolian Leopard is a rare population of the Persian Leopard found in the rugged mountains and forests of Türkiye. Recognized by its pale golden coat covered with large dark rosettes, it is a solitary predator that hunts wild goats, deer, wild boar, and other mammals. Once believed to be extinct in the region, recent confirmed sightings have renewed hope for its survival. Habitat loss, poaching, and declining prey populations continue to threaten this elusive big cat.

Chamois

Conservation Status: Least Concern

The Chamois is a sure-footed mountain goat-antelope found in the rugged mountains of Europe and western Asia. Recognized by its slender build, short hooked horns, and agile movements, it is well adapted to steep rocky terrain. Chamois feed on grasses, herbs, shrubs, and leaves, moving between high alpine meadows and lower forests with the seasons. Their remarkable climbing ability helps them escape predators and thrive in mountainous habitats.

Black Francolin

Conservation Status: Least Concern

The Black Francolin is a colorful ground-dwelling bird found in grasslands, farmland, wetlands, and scrub habitats across southern Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. Males are recognized by their glossy black plumage, chestnut neck collar, and bold white cheek patch, while females are mottled brown for camouflage. Black Francolins feed on seeds, grains, insects, and other small invertebrates while foraging on the ground. Their loud, distinctive calls are a familiar sound across their range, especially during the breeding season.
